We transformed the inaccessible hillside of this Oakland backyard into a private terraced garden paradise, with layered plantings that create depth and versatility. Closest to the house at the top of the hill is a lush lawn for lounging. A thyme-scented stepping stone path passes down some stairs to a small sunny patio, and zigzags through several terraces flanked by colorful cannas, salvias, and a bright bougainvillea. The sunny lowest level has ample space for veggies and herbs, and a quiet little nook with a bench in it to rest or simply take in the view. |
